Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh and Rohan Nanthakumar appear before Inter-American Court of Human Rights

Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh and Rohan Nanthakumar appeared before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for the advisory proceedings on climate change and human rights in Barbados. This advisory opinion, which was requested by the Republics of Colombia and Chile, has garnered unprecedented participation by countries and international organizations alike, with over 260 written briefs submitted.

Wewerinke-Singh and Nanthakumar presented their arguments alongside 36 states and public institutions, 17 Indigenous and other communities, over 90 NGOs and think tanks, 70 academic institutions, and 45 special experts. Many of these participants advocated for an opinion that would guarantee the protection of the environment within a human rights framework. This effort is a part of a broader, global goal to protect the environment through its inseparable relation with already existing human rights treaties. In short, without a healthy environment, all human rights are imperiled.

Blue Ocean law thanks Wewerinke-Singh and Nanthakumar for their contributions toward securing a progressive opinion from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
